postpartum care
The postpartum periode covers a time span of six to eight weeks after giving birth. During this time the family grows together and adjusts to the new life situation.
It is a special and sensitive time that is very vulnerable to outside disturbances. As a new family, you often go through highs and lows during this phase. The postpartum period is a time of transition and crisis: the transition from becoming a mother to being a mother, from becoming a father to being a father, from becoming parents to being parents, and from being an only child to becoming a sibling.
Postpartum care includes, in addition to guidance on handling and caring for the newborn, supprt with breastfeeding and care of birth-related injuries. Also a great deal of closeness, attention, time for conversations, and plenty of time and rest.
This is important so that the phase of getting to know the baby, adjusting and adapting to the new situation, and arriving fully in the here and now can be well integrated as smooth as possible.
Postpartum care services are covered by health insurance.
This covers a period of up to 8 weeks afer giving birth. It is possible to have daily home visits or phone calls until the baby´s tenth day of life. After that, a total of 16 further contacts are available until the end of the eighth week, which can be used for monthly follow-up visits or ongoing care.
